According to a recent meta-analysis, obesity significantly predicts incidence of sciatica, with an obese person 31% more likely to be diagnosed with sciatica than a person of normal weight.
Carrying a lot of body weight can put immense pressure on the joints, including those in the spine, so it may come as no surprise to many that obesity is a risk factor for sciatica, a condition often caused by spinal stenosis. According to a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, an overweight person is 12% more likely to be diagnosed with sciatica, and an obese person 31% more likely than someone who classes as being of normal weight.
